Question by lance: I found a fish the other day, laying dead off of Daytona, FL. What is it?
I was walking on the beach off of Daytona, FL, when i found a fish laying dead in the sand. I grew up fishing and was raised around fish, and i have never seen this fish ever. The only thing i could relate it to was the Angler Fish, but unlike any Angler Fish i was able to find in my research, this ones antenna like lure on its head had to be at least six times its body length, the fins were also long and unlike most fish fins, even the body of the fish did not look like others for it had what i can best describe as a tail like a thresher shark very long(Or like an animal tail) So strange. When i picked it up i felt the bones on it and thought to myself that maybe it was starting to decay, but upon further inspection where the fishes streamline should be and probably still was, was a backbone looking thing on both sides that reached all the way down to the end of its tail, just like a dinosaur or something coming out of these bones were thorns or horns all the way down its side and they even got sharper toward the end of its tail. I believe that is the best description i can give for the time being, i will try and post a picture as soon as possible. If anyone could help recognize this species it would be much help. Thanks.

Without a photo, it would be hard to tell for certain, but most likely, the fish you saw was a Sargassum Fish…or maybe a type of sand stargazer. They are often found along Florida’s coastline and I have kept them in saltwater aquaria.
You can see a video of a live sargassum fish here: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player/animals/fish-animals/bony-fish/fish_sargassum.html
