Meet Carl Barden and Denise Abreu and watch as they routinely tempt death extracting venom from hundreds of poisonous snakes, including cobras, corals, copperheads and rattlesnakes at the Reptile Discovery Center serpentarium, just east of DeLand, Fla. See more videos at www.news-journalonline.com

Question by dr.missmcdreamy: I purchased a comic strip backpack that advertised “News-Journal Daytona Beach, FL.”?
I went back the next week to buy more (I purchased it at the “Everythings-A-Dollar” store in Panama City, FL) & they were sold out! They said they never know what comes in week to week for them to sell so they don’t know if they’ll be getting more. It’s like blue with colorful comic strips all over it, where can I find more??

oh that is so great! thanks for the photos, bena and thanks for the party, joy! loved the pretzels with mustard and sauerkraut.
I saw this one before now, lol but it is so good. You should sell it to them for marketing purposes.
and now than I think of it.. Stephano was his role when he was pretending to be a snake expert… LOL
This guy sounds like Jim Carrey when he was Count Olaf disguised as Stephano in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events… lol

One note that I noticed in this video is at 2:15, that is an Eastern Diamondback, not a Western. Otherwise it’s a great video.
Carl and Denise are great people that really know their stuff. If you get a chance you should swing by their lab and meet them. They have a wealth of knowledge to offer anyone who walks through those doors.
WOW!!!! How cool! I can’t wait to take my kids!! I didn’t know they were there….
This is in Deland? Wow, I had no idea we had anything like this here!
Video is very well done! Good Job!
thanks for the info.
actually, if you understand snake behavior at all, you know that snakes like to find small, dark places and cram themselves in there and not move much, thats what they prefer. the work that the few venom extraction facilities do is crucial for the production of antivenom to save lives, also venom is used for medical research for the production of revolutionary drugs. so you should thank these people for wrapping there fingers around the most toxic animals on earth every day to saves lives.
It seems a bit inhumane to keep these snakes in such small environments. I imagine most of them don’t even see the light most days.
Wow that is one of the best videos Ive seen where the subject is explored and not exploited as sensationalism. Best of luck Carl, the facility is very clean and bright and inviting to all. Looks great. You represent the venomous community as well as anybody Ive seen. I cant wait to get up there and check it out.
