Question by Cowboy: Should This Child Be Taken From Her Parents By CPS??
10-month-old survives 2-story fall

By LYDA LONGA
Staff Writer

DAYTONA BEACH — A 10-month-old girl fell out of a second-story apartment window Wednesday, but she was not seriously hurt, Daytona Beach fire officials said.

The child’s mother was in the bathroom sometime after noon and the baby somehow got near a window that was open, fire spokesman Lt. Fred Godawa said.

“She pushed the screen and fell out,” he said.

The child fell from the Sail Point Bay apartment at 1025 S. Beach St. and onto a flower bed that broke the impact, Godawa said.

“She seemed all right according to the mother, but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution,” he said.

Not necessarily, but I do believe that authorities should investigate the situation and do what they can to ensure the child is safe in the meantime.

A child having an accident doesn’t make a parent a bad parent — it’s very much possible that the mother was unaware that the window was a danger. Anyone who has ever had a child knows that childproofing is MORE than difficult. I once cared for a child who, in the time it took me to fill up a container of juice, managed to get on a chair, unlock the deadbolt — we didn’t even know he understood what a lock was yet — and get into the kiddie pool in the back yard, clothes and all. Mistakes happen.

But, just to make sure…it should be investigated. We investigate every fire, every car accident, and we should investigate situations of danger to lives, as well.

Chances are, there’s nothing wrong with the situation in that home — the mother is probably a great mom, and like any mother, I’m sure it tore her up for that to happen. But who knows — maybe investigating will lead to her being cleared up, but finding out that other homes in the house pose the same risk. Investigation doesn’t just cover child neglect — it can help make sure that all risks are reduced for the child.

    it was an accident

Sounds like it may just be an accident. I wouldn’t get the CPS involved unless there was reason to believe there was serious and inexcusable neglect involved.

It sounds like an accident to me. My brother fell out of a 2-story window and he was fine. Blessings

i would hope the authorities are investigating the situation. i do not necessarily think the parent should have her child taken away, depends on many factors. but at least some parenting classes are in order.

If they investigate it (which I don’t think they need to because they tried to help the baby even though it seemed ok) then it seems as though it was just a horrible accident, but not really their fault. The screen broke, they didn’t know it would break, and you can’t watch a child 24/7, you have to be able to have a 2 minute bathroom break at least.
