The Storm from Outer Space

Took this while we were at Daytona Beach this summer. It snuck up behind us from the west (this shot is looking south), spun around and the edge of it came almost directly overhead. I’d never seen a cloud formation like this before. All I needed was some lightning strikes from the bottom and it would have been a perfect shot (in my mind) but to my surprise there was no lightning at all.
The formation reminds me of the movie Close Encounters, like a huge alien space ship should be emerging from it any second.

Unbelievable cloud formation, Jeff. You were very lucky and skilled to be there and to grab this shot. I’m also taken with the monochrome of the water in contrast with the blue/grey of the sky. A great photo.
Thank you all for the kind comments. It was a little scary but more awesome than anything. I couldn’t stop watching it when it came through, just to see how the overall shape slowly morphed as it turned. It was really something I won’t forget. I think this shot came from one of those right place/right time kind of things
Being at the beach I didn’t want to lug down my big camera bag and the SLRs so we just kept my wife’s Canon compact with us "just in case". Goes to show, don’t ever get caught without a camera close by
