Question by Amy m: Since Chrysler is showing footage of the 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger?
becoming the first car in nascar to do a 200 mph plus lap.How many would think it cool if they scrapped the 4 door version they have now and built a real charger with a v8 that looked similiar to the Daytona of 1969 with 2 doors ?
They could lower the fin in the back or make it similiar to nascars car of tommorows look.I think a cross between the 1969 and the 80′s Daytona could be pretty cool and the aerodynamics would be awesum.
Also by mentioning the 80′s Daytona I don’t mean to imply a 4 cylinder.V8′s only with a 5.7 base for an affordable entry level then the sky is the limit on horsepower a 600 hp viper engine offer for the top model would be cool with maybe an even more hp hennessay option available from dealers.
Ps maybe you are an import fan? What you don’t understand is that car manufacturing goes in cycles certain car companies are on top today and then struggling tommorow.Japanese quality is at an all time low also you might forget prior to the war on terror the American companies were making a very strong comeback. With the war came extremely high fuel prices giving the japanese an advantage because of their rumored fuel efficiency advantage. If you go to http://www.mycarstats.com/auto_recalls/auto_recalls.asp you will find honda has the worst recall record of any active manufacturer or division. The accord has had 184 recalls since 1990 and the civic has had 160 they are the 2 worst cars.It would seem their fuel efficiency may have more to do with fuel saved from being towed or time not driven from having recall work done.Chrysler by itself builds more different models than toyota, honda, and nissan combined.I’d like to see any one of the japanese companys try to accomplish that and do well
Howlin wolf the footage is from march 24,1970 at talladega and the driver is Buddy Baker on that day he became the first nascar driver to break 200 mph.Chewy I like your answers but please quit downing the coronet 2 of my very favorite cars I have owned were both coronets one a 66 2 door and the other a 69 2 door. The charger came from the coronet and the coronet has been around a long time. One could even make the argument the coronet is the first muscle car using the same type thinking meat heads use to call the gto the first one.Checkout the 1955 d500 coronet also look at the coronet rt’s and the superbee’s and even the plain old coronet 440′s.You have stated an affection for the GTX that is nothing more than a plymouth version of the coronet just like the belvedere is keep up the good answers but leave my coronet a lone.

the car with the big tall fin in the back?

The American car companies will be gone within 15 to 20 years, maybe even sooner. The red chinese along with the Japs are going to be the only car makers.
    Isn’t free trade wonderful?

  2. Jacob says:

that would be sweet. sign me up!!!

  3. chewy says:

    Totally agree.

    RANT ON—
I think it would be great if they killed the 4-door version charger all together.

Made the daytona a real daytona with wing and nose, and the charger a real charger, as a 2-door v-8 powerhouse. None of this euro-bastardized wanna be muscle-car.

A 4-door, is still not a real charger, and DAIMLER is gone, so CHRYSLER, get back to your roots and call this car a Coronet like it really is.

    RANT OFF— Thanks Feel better.

isn’t that the commercial with Richard Petty? #43?
That’s not a Daytona, it’s a Superbird!! Not Dodge, but Plymouth! and since Plymouth is no more..I’m sad. :-(
But I agree with you, we need some American Muscle Cars back..Even the Mustang looks good, and I’m a Mopar Fan.
I get excited about the Wing on the pickup trucks even!!
    Bring back the Wing!!!

  5. Coastcowboy says:

    The wing car lives!
The 1969 Plymouth Superbird is my all time favorite muscle car — the holy grail of ALL muscle car fanatics. No, it wasn’t the fastest, no it wasn’t the quickest but it damn sure was/is the most outrageous musclecar EVER built.
    Long live the wing!

First I’d like to thank you for the v-8 only. I think the small charger was a real ‘slick’ looking car and have no doubt about the aerodynamics being good, but how would you work the grill of the thing? I like the old mopar’s best, I had a dodge monaco…67 with one of the strongest engines I’ve ever owned, a 440 duel ex 4bbl, cast iron free flow ex manifolds. These kids these days know nothing about to torque

  7. inagaddadavida_loca says:

Dodge already has a 2-door coupe – it’s called the Challenger, and it is coming out next year. Having two coupes would not be feasable, not to mention cost-effective. The market for big coupes like this is very small. Chrysler needs to concentrate on making quality products that the general public wants.

Besides, what’s not “real” about the current Charger?

ADDENDUM: There was no D500 in 1955. And 18 seconds does not a musclecar make. The GTO was the first musclecar, but there were musclecars before the GTO. Stop trying to put a square peg in a round hole just to give Mopars glory because that’s revisionist history and nothing less. If you want to form a good argument, you must get your facts straight and present them in a concise manner. :mytwocents:

tivo the commercial, it is not number 43, i think it is actually number 23 on the commercial. I think the superbird came out in 1970, using a 1970 b body. I agree, there are no 4 door chargers!!! Come on chrysler, gives us old schoolers to talk about again! our memories are fading from the days when we used to be able to talk plum crazy and go mango!
